Decorating Tips
Professional cake makers can make their cakes look magnificent and very finished by using fondant over each layer of the cake. Rolled fondant is like a stretchy, marshmallow icing that fits over the layers of a cake. They keep the crumbs of the cake inside, smooth out any rough spots and make it much easier to decorate the outside. Fondant is not usually used on homemade cakes but if you are trying to achieve a perfect, professional-looking cake you will probably need to buy or make fondant for your dog cake. It is all right for your dog to eat fondant but he probably shouldn’t eat a lot of it since it is very sugary.
For homemade dog cakes you can make them look very cute by using cut outs of dog-related items as decorations. You can use a dog bone-shaped cutter to make dog bones on the top of the cake. You can decorate the top of the cake with dog bone-shaped treats that you’ve made and top them off with cream cheese. You can also find cutters in the shape of dogs and make doggy-shaped treats for the top of the cake.

Don’t forget that you can cut out cardboard shapes of things in a theme for the top of the cake and cover them with cream cheese or icing. If your dog loves agility you could cut out a little agility course for the top of the cake and use a little food coloring to make it very bright and colorful.
If you and your dog go to dog shows you could cut out cardboard to make a dog show ribbon and decorate the top of the cake with it.

It helps in decorating the top and sides of your cake to have a pastry bag and pipette so you can squeeze out just the amount you need. You can also make flowers, swirls and other designs.
If your icing needs to be a little thicker for decorating purposes you can stiffen it with a little meringue powder. This is basically powdered egg whites.
Some recipes call for nuts. These won’t hurt your dog but do chop them well since they may not be broken down thoroughly during digestion.

Remember that you can use things to decorate your dog’s cake that aren’t edible. You may wish to use small toys — perhaps little dogs or collectible items. Just remember to remove them before your dog dives into the cake!
You can also decorate the cake with things that your dog may wish to concentrate on later, such as a tasty dog bone or a Kong.
Don’t forget that your dog doesn’t need to eat a lot of cake. Eating a lot of rich cake can cause an upset stomach. And of course, a regular diet of cake and treats can pack the pounds on puppies and people alike. Just a little cake, please, and easy on the treats.
You can really be as creative as you like when decorating your dog’s cake. You’re trying to please him and make him happy. Of course, anything you do is going to make him happy.
